According to "Live and Invest Overseas" which produces a guide to the World’s Best Places To Retire Portugal has been ranked the No 1 country for retirement.
The 2021 Overseas Retirement Index claims to be the most comprehensive, well-researched resource. They chose 14 countries suitable for a happy retirement.
Other countries that were ranked high in the list is Mexico, Ecuador, Panama, Belize, Hungary, France, Malta, Greece, Colombia, Italy, Thailand, Indonesia and finally, Vietnam.
According to them Portugal is the third safest country in the world, according to the Global Peace Index. It has the second-highest density of Blue Flag-awarded beaches in the world. Portugal provides a fast-track method to residency through the Portuguese Golden Visa, which has recently been extended until January 1st 2022. It has a low cost of living compared to many other countries in Europe.
There are tax incentives for foreign residents. Portugal's 'non-habitual residents' (NHR) scheme gives special tax benefits to new residents for their first ten years in the country and includes a flat 10% tax on foreign pension income and withdrawals.
