The D8 comes in two options: a "temporary stay" allowing you to reside in Portugal for up to 12 months and a "residence visa" with a potential stay of up to 5 years, renewable or exchangeable for permanent residency. Opting for the residence visa can lead to Portuguese citizenship after 5 years.
